Most Common Cockroach Species

The brown-banded cockroach can be found all over the United States. As the name suggests, the species is brown and features noticeable banding across its wings. The brown-banded cockroach prefers drier, higher, and warmer locations, such as bathrooms, kitchen cabinets, and behind picture frames. Moreover, this roach often hides egg cases inside or underneath furniture, and the males typically have larger wings than females.

The oriental cockroach is also one of the most common roaches homeowners discover in their homes. They generally live in the sewers and can enter homes through drains and door thresholds, especially during the summer. Once indoors, the roaches start looking for cool and damp places, such as crawl spaces and basements. They are also known as black beetle cockroaches due to their smooth, dark body and are among the dirtiest roaches.

The American cockroach has a reddish-brown body with a yellow figure-eight mark on the back of the head. It is the largest home-infesting cockroach, and like the previous entry,  roam basements and sewers, particularly around drains and pipes.  They can also appear in laundry rooms, bathrooms, and kitchens, searching for food and water. They are most active when the temperature exceeds 70 degrees but can also endure lower temperatures if the conditions are right.

Another invader that frequently enters houses is the wood cockroach. It has twelve sub-species, and it feeds on dead wood, which is why they can be brought into the house with firewood. The species is around one-inch long, its body is brown, and some of the roaches have white edges on their wings. The males have longer wings than females, and both sexes can contaminate food, triggering asthma and allergies.

The final notable cockroach species on this list is the Australian cockroach. The insect is a common sight in houses and around perimeters of various buildings. They can grow up to one and a half inches long, and their body is brown with a lateral pale yellow stripe on their forewing. The adults can live anywhere between 120-180 days, whereas the females can produce up to twelve egg cases, each of which contains twenty-four eggs.

Getting rid of Cockroaches - Our Process

Identify

The first step San Tan Pest And Weed Control takes when dealing with cockroaches is identifying problematic areas. To do this, professional exterminators may use flashlights in popular hiding places, such as crevices in shelves and cabinets, under the sink, behind the fridge, and inside bathroom closets and cabinets. Depending on the flashlight inspection, San Tan Pest And Weed Control employees place roach glue strips in strategic areas. Once the experts have identified the roach species roaming around the house, they can decide on the appropriate method of eliminating it.

Clean

After determining the number and location of the cockroaches, technicians move on to cleaning the areas affected by the infestation. They typically start from the kitchen since it’s usually the go-to room for roaches. The technicians use special wet-and-dry vacuums to collect small debris, dirt, and any roaches hiding in the kitchen and other areas. Another useful tactic is removing any food and water sources near these locations to eliminate any reason for cockroaches to come back.

Seal

San Tan Pest And Weed Control also prevents additional cockroaches from entering the premises. The main targets include cracks around windows and doors, openings where wires or plumbing pipes pass through floors or walls, and gaps between tiles and walls. To seal them up, our experts use caulk, copper mesh, or foam. The sealing method is advantageous in apartments since it reduces cockroach migration between adjoining units.

Bait

To lure the cockroaches out of their crevices, San Tan Pest And Weed Control uses multiple types of bait, such as liquid, gel, and solid bait. Their purpose isn’t to kill the cockroaches immediately. Instead, the bait attracts the critters, they ingest it, and the roaches return to their hiding places and die. Since cockroaches are cannibalistic, the remaining ones feed on the dead roach’s body and ingest the same substance, leading to a fatal outcome.

Maintain

In some cases, San Tan Pest And Weed Control may be required to perform some maintenance to ensure that cockroach hotspots remain uninhabitable. Trained experts use dusts ideal for cracks and crevices baits can’t reach. When applied, dusts remain toxic to roaches for much longer than liquid residual insecticides. As a result, San Tan Pest And Weed Control maintains problematic areas properly and minimizes the risk of another cockroach infestation in the future.
