Carefree, Arizona

Carefree is a beautiful town in Maricopa County, Arizona. In 1955, Tom Darlington and K.T. Palmer opened a real estate office called Darlington Palmer Realtors in Cave Creek. The land they purchased for $44,000 became the town of Carefree. A year later, the Carefree Development Corporation was established.

The street names for the town were appointed during a party in Phoenix, where the guests provided “colorful” names such as Ho Hum Road, Easy Street, Lazy Lane, Wampum Way, and more.

One of the most notable structures in the town includes the Sundial, a metal gnomon that points to the North Star. The gnomon stands at 35 feet tall and 62 feet long. It is the largest sundial on the continent and the third-largest in the world.

The town was home to Southwestern Studios that spread to 160 acres of the desert. It included three soundstages, screening rooms, edit bays, make-up, western street, production facilities, etc. The studio was used for filming several movies and TV shows in the seventies.

Today, Carefree is a peaceful town with over 3,000 people who appreciate its warm climate, beautiful natural sights, and plenty of unique shops, restaurants, and galleries.
